An MRI referral can come with plenty of questions. MRI produces detailed images of structures inside the body. In neurosurgical care, imaging is considered alongside your symptoms, examination and other information. Ask which question your scan is intended to help answer.
MRI safety screening matters. Tell the scan team about implants, devices, previous surgery and possible pregnancy, and answer their screening questions fully. Follow the centre's instructions about clothing and metal items. If enclosed spaces make you anxious, contact the centre beforehand to discuss support. During scanning, you may receive hearing protection and be asked to remain still.
Ask who will receive the report, how results will be communicated and whether you should arrange a follow-up. Follow your own scan-centre instructions rather than another person's preparation.

Know what to ask before your scan. This guide offers a useful starting point for a conversation with the practice.
Ask what the scan is intended to investigate
The most useful starting point is your own experience: when the concern began, what has changed and what you want explained. Keep the chronology concise so that the clinician can ask further questions where needed.
Tell the scan team about implants or metal in your body
Instructions for a particular scan, test or review come from the responsible clinical team. Contact them if you are unsure what the appointment involves. Avoid treating an online post as a personalised preparation or treatment plan.
Follow the scan centre instructions for your appointment
Ask for an explanation in language you understand. Write down the next step and any follow-up information you are given. If the situation is urgent, use an appropriate urgent-care service rather than waiting for an online reply.
