Benign Intracranial Hypertension.

Conditions

Benign intracranial hypertension is a disease that affects the brain. Benign intracranial hypertension is when there is increased pressure in the brain, but there isn’t any evidence of any brain pathology from imaging studies. It is also known as idiopathic intracranial hypertension or pseudotumourcerebi.

While treatment for benign intracranial hypertension may include medication and diet plans to encourage weight loss when the infection is recurring, Dr Timakia may recommend surgery as a treatment, and he will use the following to guide treatment:

Neuroimaging

These are brain imaging studies such as CT and MRI scan that is used to scan the brain and look at the blood flow in the veins.

Lumbar Puncture

This is a test which is used to access the spinal cavity from the back using a long needle, whilst you are put under local anaesthesia. This aids the neurosurgeon to measure the cerebrospinal fluid pressure in the cavity.

All of the above factors are taken into consideration so that Dr Timakia decides whether or not emergency surgery is needed. Neurosurgical management employs life-saving operative and non-operative techniques to provide a chance at the best possible outcome. Treatment is then individualized. Dr Timakia will explore either of the following surgical procedures to treat benign intracranial hypertension:

Optic Nerve Sheath Fenestration

Optic nerve sheath fenestration is a procedure when the surgeon will cut a window in the membrane which s surrounding the optic nerve to give the cerebrospinal fluid access to escape. Therefore vision is then stabilised or improved.

Spinal Fluid Shunt

Dr Timakia will inserts a long thin tube called a shunt into your brain or lumbar spine, to aid cerebrospinal fluid drainage.

Venous Sinus Stenting

Venous sinus stenting involves Dr Timakia inserting a stent in one of the large veins located in the head so help increase the blood’s ability to flow.

All of the above factors are taken into consideration in a matter of seconds so that Dr Timakia knows whether or not emergency surgery is needed. Neurosurgical management employs life-saving operative and non-operative techniques to provide a chance at the best possible outcome. Treatment is thus highly individualised.
