Brain Trauma.

Conditions

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is usually caused by a blow to the head during a car accident, fall, sporting injury or assault. When this occurs, the brain is injured by both the primary injury and the secondary injury as it ricochets in the skull, causing bruising, bleeding and tearing of the nerve fibres. For this reason, all brain trauma is to be taken seriously as a severe injury can result in functional and cognitive disabilities.

While treatment for mild brain trauma may include rest and medication, severe brain injuries may require emergency care and life-saving cranial surgery. Treatment is thus based on the severity of the injury, and to determine this, Dr Timakia will use the following to guide treatment:

Classification

Brain injuries are classified in terms of what area of the brain may have been injured, be it internal or external, and if any other areas were damaged such as the spine, legs or soft tissues.

Mechanism

How the brain was injured will also be a deciding factor when planning treatment, be it a sporting accident, blow to the head or a car accident.

Severity

The severity of the injury is judged on the patient’s consciousness, ability to speak and move the limbs. More severe cases will require emergency brain surgery.

Diagnostic tests and vitals

in some cases, diagnostic tests may be used to get a better understanding of the injury and its effect on the body in terms of blood pressure, heart rate and other vitals.

All of the above factors are taken into consideration in a matter of seconds so that Dr Timakia knows whether or not emergency surgery is needed. Neurosurgical management employs life-saving operative and non-operative techniques to provide a chance at the best possible outcome. Treatment is thus highly individualised.

COMMON INJURIES INCLUDE:

Concussion
A concussion can vary in severity, but in most cases are mild and allow for full recovery affecting memory, reflexes, coordination and speech temporarily.
Contusion
A contusion is a bruise on the brain which may cause damage to the brain’s structure due to bleeding and swelling in an area of the brain.
Haematoma
A haematoma is a blood clot in the brain caused by trauma. This blood clot may cause pressure in the particular part of the brain and may need operative treatment.
Haemorrhagic stroke
A hemorrhagic stroke is bleeding caused by either a brain aneurysm or a weakened blood vessel. It creates pressure to build in the skull, damaging the brain tissue.
Skull fracture
