Chronic Subdural Hematomas.
Conditions
A chronic subdural hematoma develops when a vein that is located under the skull ruptures and starts to bleed, resulting in the blood collecting between the brain and the skull. As the blood begins to fill the space, it increases the pressure and causes headaches, impaired vision, seizures, impaired memory, weakness or paralysis, and nausea.
If left untreated, the pressure will continue to build against the brain, which will result in the hematoma being a long term health problem or possibly be life-threatening, which may lead to unconsciousness or death. The exact symptoms to appear depends entirely on the location and size of the hematoma and some symptoms occur more than the others.
To diagnose subdural hematoma, Dr Timakia may use computed tomography also known as a CT scan, or magnetic resonance imaging which is called MRI scan, to get a clear image of your brain and aid him to examine the scans for signs of bleeding and locate them.
Dr Timakia will focus on protecting your brain from getting any permanent damage which will then make the symptoms easier to manage. Chronic subdural hematomas may be treated surgically where Dr Timakia will make tiny holes in the skull so that blood can flow out, to get rid of the pressure that the blood is causing to the brain. If there are large or thick clots present at the site, Dr Timakia will then temporarily remove a small piece of the skull to take out the clot or clots.
Dr Timakia may explore the following surgical procedures to treat subdural hematoma:
Burr Hole Trephination
Burr hole trephination is done by using a medical driller to drill a hole in the skull over the located area of the subdural hematoma and then the blood is suctioned out through the drilled hole.
Craniotomy
A craniotomy involves a large section of the skull is removed to allow the surgeon access to the subdural hematoma so that he can reduce the pressure.
All of the above factors are taken into consideration in a matter of seconds so that Dr Timakia knows whether or not emergency surgery is needed. Neurosurgical management employs life-saving operative and non-operative techniques to provide a chance at the best possible outcome. Treatment is thus highly individualised.
