Degenerative Conditions of the Spine.

Conditions

Degenerative spine conditions occur when you gradually lose normal structure and function of the spine. Spine degeneration is caused normally by ageing, even though they may also be caused by tumours, infection and arthritis. Pressure on the spinal cord and the nerve roots due to degeneration can cause slipped or herniated discs, spinal stenosis when the spinal canal is narrowed, and osteoarthritis when the cartilages in the spinal joints get broken-down.

Treatment for a degenerating spine depends entirely on the type and the severity of the condition. Dr Timakia may recommend surgery or procedure called a discectomy, where he will take the pressure off from your nerves by removing the injured part of the disc. In some instances, he may be able to remove the whole disk and replace it with an artificial one.

Surgical treatment that may be used to treat degenerative spinal conditions include:

Laminectomy

Laminectomy is a surgical procedure where the lamina or the back portion of the spine is removed to provide room for the nerves and reduce inflammation.

Spinal Fusion

Spinal fusion is a surgical procedure that is mostly used in most severe degenerative back conditions. This procedure involves bones being joined together with screws or bone graft to aid stability.

Micro-discectomy

Micro-discectomy is a procedure where portions of the herniated disc are removed to relieve pressure on the spinal cord.

All of the above factors are taken into consideration in a matter of seconds so that Dr Timakia knows whether or not emergency surgery is needed. Neurosurgical management employs life-saving operative and non-operative techniques to provide a chance at the best possible outcome. Treatment is thus highly individualised.

COMMON DEGENERATIVE SPINE CONDITIONS INCLUDE:

Herniated discs
Herniated discs occur when the centre of the discs ruptures, resulting in the discs becoming smaller and can’t provide as much cushioning.
Sciatica
Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve is irritated or compressed, which then will result in pain, weakness or numbness on one side of the lower body.
Spinal stenosis
Spinal stenosis occurs when the spinal canal become narrow, which then puts pressure on the nerves causing pains, weakness or numbness on and around the affected areas.
