Pain management.
Conditions
Pain management may be simple or be complex, depending on the cause of the pain. Pain can be disabling and frustrating as it may interfere with your sleep, work, activities and quality time spent with family and friends. Pain management offers relief so you can enjoy life to the fullest.
Pain treatment or management is influenced by the history of the pain, the pain’s intensity, duration, irritation and relieving conditions, and structures that are causing the pain. Dr Timakia diagnoses and manages pains for the following conditions:
Cervical/Lumbar Degeneration or Spondylosis
Spondylosis is a type of arthritis that is stimulated by wear and tear to the spine. This occurs when the spinal discs and joints degenerate, when the discs dehydrate and shrink, including bony projections along the edges of the bones. In result, the spine movement will be impaired, which will affect the nerves and other functions. Dr Timakia will then recommend surgery where he will remove a herniated disc or bone spur, remove part of the vertebra and fusing a portion of the neck using a bone graft and hardware. This treatment is done for both cervical and lumbar spondylosis.
Post-Concussive Symptoms
Post-concussion syndrome (PCS) is a condition where the symptoms of concussion or a head injury last longer, after the injury. Concussion symptoms are headaches, light-headed, fatigue, irritability and anxiety. Dr Timakia will then recommend that a neuro-optometric rehabilitation to done, where lenses, prisms and filters are used to aid stimulation of some parts of the brain that are not working as they should.
Occipital Neuralgia
Occipital neuralgia is a type of headache which starts in the upper neck or back of the head and the spreads or radiates behind the eyes, forehead and up to the scalp. Dr Timakia may recommend either surgery where he will eliminate pressure on the nerves by moving intruding blood vessels or use pulse radiofrequency to stimulate the occipital nerves to prohibit them from sending pain signals.
Trigeminal Neuralgia
Trigeminal neuralgia is a chronic pain which affects the nerve that carries sensation from the face to the brain, known as the trigeminal nerve. Dr Timakia may recommend that a microvascular decompression be done. This procedure is done to relocate or remove blood vessels which are in contact with the trigeminal root to stop the nerve from malfunctioning.
