Spinal Trauma.
Conditions
A spinal cord injury often results from sudden trauma to the spine where the spine fractures or dislocates the bones that are surrounding the spinal cord, also called the vertebrae. Most injuries in the spinal cord are not severed but are more likely to cause fractures and compression of the vertebrae. A traumatic spine injury crushes and destroys extensions of the nerve cells which carry signals along the spinal cord, the brain and the rest of the body.
While treatment for spine trauma may include oral medication and immobilisation, severe spine injuries may require emergency care and life-saving surgery. When you in hospital, the neurosurgeon will focus on maintaining your breathing ability and immobilising your neck to prevent further spinal cord damage. Dr Timakia will use the imaging scans to locate where the issue is and how to resolve it. Treatment is thus based on the severity of the injury, and to determine this, Dr Timakia will use the following surgical treatment:
Decompression
Decompression is a surgical procedure where the cause of the pressure in the spinal cord or on the spinal nerves is removed.
Internal Fixation & Instrumentation
Internal fixation and instrumentation is a surgical procedure where metal rods, screws, and or hooks are inserted in the vertebrae to protect the spinal cord or the spinal nerves from further injury.
Bone Grafting for Fusion
Bone grafting for fusion is a procedure where a bone graft is taken from the back of the pelvis or rib, which will be placed onto the injured bone area. This is done to bond the vertebrae and fuse it.
All of the above factors are taken into consideration in a matter of seconds so that Dr Timakia knows whether or not emergency surgery is needed. Neurosurgical management employs life-saving operative and non-operative techniques to provide a chance at the best possible outcome. Treatment is thus highly individualised.
COMMON INJURIES INCLUDE:
Tetreplegia
Tetreplegia occurs when there is a damage in the cervical spinal cord and in some cases, they are severe, which may lead to various degrees of paralysis of all limbs.
Paraplegia
Paraplegia is when sensation and movement of your body are removed from the lower half of the body, including the legs due to a damage of the thoracic spinal cord.
Triplegia
Triplegia occurs when you lose sensation and movement in one arm and both legs due to incomplete spinal cord injury.
