Spine & Brain Infections.
Conditions
The brain, the spinal cord and other surrounding structures may become infected by different kinds of germs such as the common affecters known as bacteria and viruses. Other germs such as parasites, fungi and other organisms may affect the central nervous system (CNS), although rarely.
Brain infections
Depending on the location of the infection in the brain, different names are given to the diseases. The disease is:
Meningitis
Occurs when the surrounding three-layered membranes of the brain, spinal cord and the cerebrospinal fluid called the meninges, are inflamed.is a surgical procedure where the cause of the pressure in the spinal cord or on the spinal nerves is removed.
Encephalitis
Occurs when the brain itself is inflamed.
Brain Abscess
Occurs when there is an accumulation of the infectious material anywhere within the central nervous system, which will affect the microorganisms.
Spinal infections : Spinal infections are infections that are classified by the location where they occurred, such as the vertebral column, intervertebral disc space, the spinal canal and the adjacent soft tissues. These infections are caused by bacteria or fungal organisms, which may even occur after surgery.
All of the above factors are taken into consideration in a matter of seconds so that Dr Timakia knows whether or not emergency surgery is needed. Neurosurgical management employs life-saving operative and non-operative techniques to provide a chance at the best possible outcome. Treatment is thus highly individualised.
THE MOST COMMONLY USED SURGERIES OR PROCEDURES USED TO DRAIN THE INFECTION ARE:
Simple aspiration
Simple aspiration is when a hole is burred into the skull to detect the infected area and completely drain the infection.
Craniotomy
A craniotomy is a surgery done to cut open the skull to reach and locate the infected area so that the pus is drained and the infection is treated.
These procedures are recommended by the neurosurgeon if there are recurring infections, or the infection doesn't get cured even after oral antibiotics are prescribed.
THERE ARE DIFFERENT TYPES OF SPINAL INFECTIONS WHICH MAY AFFECT THE SPINE. THESE INFECTIONS ARE:
Vertebral osteomyelitis,
these are infections that mostly occur in the lumbar spine, which may cause pains in the arm or leg, fever, weight loss, muscles spasms and problems walking or using your hands.
Discitis,
these are uncommon infections that occur on their own or after surgery.
Spinal epidural abscess,
are common lumbar infections which cause weakness, skin boils, back pain, pains in the arms or legs, spine tenderness, and bowel, bladder and abdominal issues.
Meningitis
causes the tissues around the brain and spine swell up. Meningitis can spread rapidly and cause severe complications if it is not treated properly.
Surgery is recommended if non-surgical techniques don’t resolve the infection. Dr Timakia will perform surgery to aid him to clean and removing the affected tissues to allow the infected area to maintain adequate and normal blood flow to help heal, also maintain or restore spinal stability and lastly limit neurological impairment.
