Spontaneous CSF Leakage.

Conditions

A cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak is a condition that is under diagnosed, but it is often debilitated. It occurs when there is a small tear or a hole in the outer membrane of the spinal cord or the brain, which contains the cerebrospinal fluid. The outer membrane is called the dura mater.

When the cerebrospinal fluid leaks out of the dura mater, it causes the brains volume and pressure of the fluid to drop, in result, the cushioning effect is then reduced and the brain slumps. This will cause severe pains, pressure, blurred or double vision, eye pain, neck pain, hearing impairment, spasms and possible seizures, just to name a few. The most common and significant risk or complication that is associated with cranial cerebrospinal fluid leaks.

Spontaneous cerebrospinal leaks are linked with developmental defects of the membranes to extend beyond. An opening in the membranes makes the nervous system more likely to be influenced or harmed by an infection.

Dr Timakia may recommend surgery when a cerebrospinal fluid leak doesn't improve with conservative treatment when there is a severe cerebrospinal fluid leak that won't heal on its own, and there is blood clotting in the brain and spinal cord. Surgery may involve suturing or stitching of any tearing to prevent further cerebrospinal fluid leakage.

Treatment for a cerebrospinal fluid leak depends entirely on the type of the fluid leak, the location of the hole or tear that’s causing the leak and the underlying cause of the leak as well. The common treatments for cerebrospinal fluid leak include:

An Epidural Blood Patch

Is achieved when blood is drawn from you and is then immediately injected in the epidural space.

Fibrin Glue

May be applied to seal a known spinal fluid leak site and is used when the blood patch repeatedly fails.

Surgical Repair

is a repair where there is an application of artificial dura patches and the use of aneurysm clips.

All of the above factors are taken into consideration in a matter of seconds so that Dr Timakia knows whether or not emergency surgery is needed. Neurosurgical management employs life-saving operative and non-operative techniques to provide a chance at the best possible outcome. Treatment is thus highly individualised.
